Om grønn og hvit te: Drikk Grønn Te!Av Fredrik Gyllesten Hva synes du om en drikke som inneholder kun 2 kalorier per kopp, øker karbohydrat -og fettforbrenningen, forbedrer kondisjonen, beskytter mot en rekke krefttyper, beskytter mot diabetes, styrker immunforsvar, minsker sannsynligheten for lærevansker, minsker stress, beskytter mot HIV, beskytter mot inflammatorisk tarmsykdom, beskytter mot dårlig ånde, forbedrer humøret, minsker sannsynlighet for parkinsons sykdom, forbedrer mentalt fokus og beskytter mot hjertesykdommer? For godt til å være sant? De fleste av disse positive helseeffektene kommer fra det høye innholdet av polyfenoler og andre antioksidanter, hovedsaklig kommer helseeffektene fra epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) som finnes i store mengder i grønn te, og som også har blitt populært i kosttilskudd, med god grunn. En rekke av helseeffektene kommer også fra koffeinet i te, som f. eks økning av karbohydrat -og fettforbrenningen, forbedring av kondisjonen, forbedret humør og økt mentalt fokus. Mange av de nevnte effektene kommer både fra koffein og EGCG (grønn te). Nå vil jeg gå nærmere inn på noen av de viktigste helseeffektene, og avslutte artikkelen med informasjon om potensielle helserisikoer ved inntak av te. The water was foul and unfit for drinking, so he ordered it to be boiled. Suddenly the wind blew a tea leaf into his cup of hot water. The curious emperor let the leaf steep, then drank the brew. Tea was born.White tea became revered during China's Song Dynasty (960-1279). It was the choice of the royal court and was given as tribute to the emperor. White tea leaves and buds were ground into a silvery powder, which was then whisked in bowls during the Song Tea Ceremony. This was the inspiration for the famous Japanese Tea Ceremony. One Song Emperor was renowned for his love of white tea. Hui Zong (1101-1125) became so obsessed with finding the perfect tea that he lost much of his empire. Over the next several centuries, powdered white tea and the Song Tea Ceremony were abandoned for loose-leaf tea. In 1885, select varieties of the tea plant were developed for white tea. White tea has come a long way in its long history. It was largely unknown outside China and the Orient until recently. Now, with a renewed interest in fine tea and remarkable discoveries about its health benefits, white tea is being discovered and enjoyed around the world. www.whiteteaguide.com Om hvit te White Tea Could Keep You Healthy And Looking YoungScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2009) — Next time you’re making a cuppa, new research shows it might be wise to opt for a white tea if you want to reduce your risk of cancer, rheumatoid arthritis or even just age-associated wrinkles. Researchers from Kingston University teamed up with Neal’s Yard Remedies to test the health properties of 21 plant and herb extracts. They discovered all of the plants tested had some potential benefits, but were intrigued to find white tea considerably outperformed all of them. Professor Declan Naughton, from the School of Life Sciences at Kingston University in South West London, said the research showed white tea had anti-ageing potential and high levels of anti-oxidants which could prevent cancer and heart disease. “We’ve carried out tests to identify plant extracts that protected the structural proteins of the skin, specifically elastin and collagen,” he explained. “Elastin supports the body’s natural elasticity which helps lungs, arteries, ligaments and skin to function. It also helps body tissue to repair when you suffer wounds and stops skin from sagging.” Collagen is a protein found in connective tissues in the body and is important for skin, strength and elasticity, he added. Results showed white tea prevented the activities of the enzymes which breakdown elastin and collagen which can lead to wrinkles that accompany ageing. These enzymes, along with oxidants, are associated with inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Naughton said: “These enzymes and oxidants are key components of normal body processes. However, in inflammatory conditions, suppressing the activities of these excess components has been the subject of decades of research. We were surprised to find such high activity for the white tea extracts in all five tests that were conducted.” The researchers were blown away by exactly how well the white tea had performed. “We were testing very small amounts far less than you would find in a drink,” Professor Naughton, one of the country’s leading specialists on inflammation, said. “The early indicators are that white tea reduces the risk of inflammation which is characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers as well as wrinkles.” Eight of the other plants and herbs analysed also helped protect against the breakdown of both elastin and collagen. After white tea, bladderwrack performed well followed by extracts of cleavers, rose, green tea, angelica, anise and pomegranate. Om grønn te BBC: Green tea 'slows prostate cancer'A chemical found in green tea appears to slow the progression of prostate cancer, a study has suggested. Green tea has been linked to a positive effect on a wide range of conditions, including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. The research, in the US journal Cancer Prevention Research, found a significant fall in certain markers which indicate cancer development. A UK charity said the tea might help men manage low-risk tumours.
Although previous studies have shown benefits from drinking green tea - including some positive findings in relation to prostate cancer, there have been mixed results. In this study, Philadelphia-based researchers tested a compound called Polyphenon E. They were looking for a number of biomarkers - molecules - including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) which are indicators of developing cancer. They also looked for prostate specific antigen (PSA) - a protein only found in the prostate. Levels can rise if cancer is present. '12 cups' The study included 26 men, aged 41 to 72 years, who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and who were scheduled for radical prostate surgery. Patients took four capsules containing Polyphenon E for an average of 34 days, up until the day before surgery - the equivalent of around 12 cups of normally brewed concentrated green tea. The study found a significant reduction in levels of HGF, VEGF and PSA, with some patients demonstrating reductions of more than 30%. Dr James Cardelli, from the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, who led the study, said the compound, which was provided by the company Polyphenon Pharma, "may have the potential to lower the incidence and slow the progression of prostate cancer." There were only a few reported side effects associated with this study, and liver function remained normal. Dr Cardelli said: "We think that the use of tea polyphenols alone or in combination with other compounds currently used for cancer therapy should be explored as an approach to prevent cancer progression and recurrence." "There is reasonably good evidence that many cancers are preventable, and our studies using plant-derived substances support the idea that plant compounds found in a healthy diet can play a role in preventing cancer development and progression." 'Keep progression at bay' John Neate, chief executive of the Prostate Cancer Charity, said: "There have been several studies into green tea and its potential benefits, but there is, as yet, no conclusive evidence. "The results of this study do suggest that there is merit in further research into the effects of extracts of green tea, both in relation to its impact on the prevention of prostate cancer and in controlling progression in men already diagnosed with the disease, as was investigated in this instance." "These initial positive findings could indicate that green tea could have a place in 'active surveillance', where a slow-growing, low risk tumour is monitored for changes and men want to take something which could help keep progression at bay. "Potentially, this could mean completely avoiding, in some cases, any of the more usual medical interventions and their associated side effects." Oct. 2007 A new study shows elderly women who drank tea had higher bone density in their hips and less bone loss than women who didn't drink tea. Researchers say the results confirm previous studies that have suggested drinking tea may protect against bone loss and osteoporosis. In the study, Australian researchers surveyed 275 women between the ages of 70 and 85 who were participating in a larger five-year study of calcium supplements and osteoporosis about how much black and green tea (but not herbal teas) they drank. Bone density measurements of the hip were also taken at the beginning and end of the five-year study. The results, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that women who were regular tea drinkers had higher bone density in two sites in the hip compared with non-tea drinkers. The bone mineral density in tea drinkers was higher than in non-tea drinkers. Tea drinkers also had less loss of bone density over a four-year period compared with non-tea drinkers. These results took into account factors such as smoking history and use of calcium supplements. The researchers did not find a relationship between the number of cups of tea consumed per day and bone mineral density. "Other variables, such as dietary calcium and coffee intake, physical activity, and smoking did not appear to be important confounders of the relation between tea and [bone density]," write researcher Amanda Devine, of the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia, and colleagues. "Thus, overall our data support the concept that tea intake has beneficial effects on bone structure by reducing bone loss." Researchers say more research is needed to determine how drinking tea affects bone density. Previous studies have suggested that phytochemicals in - tea, such as flavonoids, may be responsible for the protective effect against bone loss due to their estrogen-like properties.
